For people with prior knowledge/ experience of textiles who wish to try out new techniques or approaches to their work.
Elizabeth’s Outline
The initial design work at the beginning of the workshop is useful for generating ideas. I do not ask students to draw but to manipulate paper surfaces and found materials by folding, tearing etc to enable them to consider edges, layering and combining disparate materials together.
Students then select the areas that they wish to translate into textile responses based on another word list. For example the mood of a paper experiment could be interpreted as ‘fragile’ by the use of tissue papers, crumpled plant papers and tape This could then lead on to be inspiration for textile samples combining transparent fabrics, crushed silk and ribbon.
Students will also consider mark making using simple monoprint and block printing techniques onto manmade fabrics. These fragments would then be ‘distressed’ in different ways by using irons, heat tools and felt needles to achieve more complex surface textures. We would then use acrylic paint and silk dyes to further enhance the surfaces and consider colour.
The final part of the workshop is to return to original ideas from the paper designs as inspiration. The fabric experiments we have made can then be assembled into more considered pieces by using bonding methods and stitching
