62 Group Artists Heather Belcher and Lucy Brown will be in conversation, introducing the 62 Group, outlining its aims, history and its connections through textiles at Goldsmiths and beyond. As Goldsmith Textile Alumni, and 62 Group exhibiting and committee members, Heather and Lucy will reflect on their past and present individual practices and future projects of the 62 Group.
Tuesday 11th June. 1-2pm

The Witchcraft Series (Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead) by Anne Jackson, 62 Group artist.
Anne Jackson’s current work titled The Witchcraft Series, explores witch persecution in European history, the idea of “the witch” and witchcraft in contemporary culture. Anne sees this subject as a rich metaphorical territory, with its resonances of fear of the unknown, the feminine, and the “other”. Anne will discuss these themes further in context with her personal practice.

Anne Jackson’s current project, entitled ‘The Witchcraft Series’, explores the idea of witchcraft, and historic witch-persecution, as a mode of reflection upon aspects of contemporary Western culture. She draws on primary historical sources, including early printed books and witch-hunting manuals, wood-cut illustrations and ‘magic charms’. Working through the medium of knotted tapestry, she recontextualises these images and texts, often using the seductive textile surface to comment on injustice, intolerance and fear of the unknown. Some works in the series memorialise individual women caught up in the witch-hysteria of the Early Modern period. Others integrate original ‘magical’ signs with modern chemical formulae, associated with genetic engineering and the development of biofuels.

Anne Jackson exhibits in the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia. Her work is held in the collections of the City of Aalborg, Denmark, the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest, the Geffrye Museum, London, the Christie Hospital, Manchester, and other public and private collections. Her work is featured in a number of publications, most recently, Tapestry: A Woven Narrative, (T. Wilcox, C. Penney, F. Mathison; Black Dog, London, 2012) and Textiles: The Art of Mankind (M.Schoeser; Thames & Hudson, London, 2012). Her practice also encompasses critical writing and curating.

Michelle Stephens is a practicing textile artist, curator, lecturer and arts consultant. Stephens' works act as a physical manifestation of her own personal reflections and reactions to given places as well as a dialogue between the particular materials and techniques.

The distinguishing element to Stephens’ practice has not been to pursue a skill in a traditional manner, but to unravel and question it to develop new skills. She uses these skills, histories and traditions of textiles in strategic ways to challenge conventions and generate new practical and theoretical perspectives.

Furthermore, a specific interest in line and how it can be distorted and formed has led to a number of varied outcomes. How meaning is constructed and understood from line and how it can be transformed by contemporary sensibilities into a new visual language is what Stephens pursues within her work. As a result internal oppositions exist within the work; geometric and organic, construction and deconstruction, order and chaos.

The introduction of technology alongside hand crafted techniques has always been of great interest to Stephens. Laser cutting and digital technologies are combined with personal abstracted weave techniques throughout her work. This enables Stephens to establish her own unique voice through the way in which she assembles the individual fragments. These arrangements of forms, colour combinations, outlines of structure, and the degree of complexity or openness are all choices that she makes during the making process.

Michelle Stephens graduated from the University of Ulster Belfast with First Class Honours from her B.A. (Hons) in Fine and Applied Arts degree, in June 2010. Following a placement year in the US, Stephens returned to complete her degree in Belfast, only then to stay on another year as Artist in Residence within the Textile Art Department. Most recently she has now taken up a place on the Making IT program with Craft NI at R-Space Gallery, Lisburn for two years.

Stephens is now a part-time lecturer in the University of Ulster, Belfast. Complementing her practice with art workshops and demonstrations in art institutions enables Stephens to share her processes and experiences with the public, students and other practitioners. As well as this she also facilitates workshops in a variety of environments including hospitals, heritage sites, art centres as well as primary, secondary and tertiary education.

We are very sad to announce the death of one of our members Shizuko Kimura.

Shizuko joined the Group in 1998 and saw herself as an artist working in a form of figurative fine art but it was important to her that the viewer recognised the textile root of her work. Her beautifully delicate life drawings in thread on fine muslin were always an arresting addition to our exhibitions and we will dearly miss her searching and sensitive eye.

We were privileged to have her as a member.
