Andi Walker

Profile

I am an artist based in Leeds, specialising in textiles as a medium for storytelling and material innovation. My practice challenges traditional techniques, exploring how narratives are constructed, deconstructed, and reimagined through the dynamic interplay of materials, processes, and forms.

At the heart of my work lies a deep engagement with the evolving narratives that define human experience. I investigate how stories are made, unmade, and remade over time, utilising a dynamic interplay between materials such as ink, cloth, and varying textures. By challenging conventional textile techniques, I aim to innovate and deeply engage with the artistic process.

Holding an MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art, my work encompasses material led experiments and collaborative community projects. Notable projects include Stitched Stories at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2022/23), a collaborative quilt incorporating 144 visitor narratives, and Coded Stitch (2020), a series employing embroidery on slate to explore identity and personal history. In Anatomy of a Quilt at Sunny Bank Mills (2024), I invited viewers to immerse themselves in the monochromatic rhythms of layered squares, contemplating the stories they hold.

My practice embraces movement and interaction, exploring how textiles can activate space and narrative in unique ways. Whether exhibited as standalone pieces or extending into performative contexts, my work seeks to disrupt and expand the possibilities of textile  based art, offering audiences new ways to connect with the stories embedded within materials.
