The Future of Textiles : Textile Art 2028

On Thursday 19 April 2018 the Fashion & Textile Museum in Bermondsey, London will welcome the 62 Group for the first talk in a series of annual lectures at the museum.

The opening lecture concentrates on the future of textile art with guest speaker Jessica Hemmings, Professor of Crafts at the Academy of Design & Crafts (HDK), University of Gothenburg, and 62 Group member and textile artist Caron Penney.

Jessica Hemmings will time travel to 2028 and imagine textile art of the future. By discussing the current enthusiasm for textile art exhibitions at commercial galleries (Do Ho Su – Victoria Miro gallery, Ibrahim Mahama – White Cube) and the material choices and techniques of today this lecture will attempt to forecast trends in textile art a decade from now.

Caron Penney will showcase 62 Group’s new exhibition, Ctrl/Shift, opening at the Midlands Art Centre in 2018 and ‘what’s next’ in the lecture programme.
