Sian Martin

Profile

Siân Martin has been a maker and educator of textile art since she graduated from Birmingham Polytechnic with a BA Hons and MA in Embroidery. She has exhibited regularly with the 62 Group since 1975 and is also a member of the Textile Study Group.

Born in Wales, Siân moved to Somerset in 1980 and has worked in higher, secondary and adult education. She started Distant Stitch in 1991, an online  distance learning textile course and offers mentoring as an extended support. Siân is an enthusiastic teacher and has travelled widely, giving lectures and leading workshops.

Siân’s definition of stitch is a broad one that encompasses wrapping, threading, binding and looping as well as conventional stitch. She uses textile processes with unconventional textile materials such as wire, cane, willow and acrylic. Recent work explores ideas of transparency, shadow and layers; frequently involving suspended and three dimensional forms.
